So, when is it acceptable to talk about no way home ed001? You seen it yet?

Wyred

{Ed001's Note - it is fine with me any time, though I haven't seen it, no. I hear it is great though.}

1.) 26 Dec 2021 12:10:35
Honestly not sure how I feel about it, there was so much to set up with the different Villians for those who haven’t watched the non mcu Spider films that the first hour and a half was pre amble. The last hour though was brilliant.

I was worried how they would piece it all together but In fairness it was well thought out, just a bit slow, and we are truly in the multiverse now. Think Dr Strange will need to bring Loki into the fold otherwise that series makes little impact.

I probably will need to watch it again to make my mind up but interested to see how others found it.

{Ed001's Note - so it is 2 and a half hours long then? Wow films are defo getting longer these days.}

2.) 26 Dec 2021 13:06:33
Yep it’s a long one, I think this one needed to be though. They had to presume that these films were watched by first time viewers so there was a lot of groundwork to put in.

It’s a huge film for fan service but I think I had built this one up in my head prior to seeing it. Plus I knew the big spoilers going into it which ruined it a little.

{Ed001's Note - I have no problem with them being long, I would rather they told the story properly than cut it short.}

So I got round to watching rise of Sky Walker, I had heard mainly bad things so didn’t rush to watch it.

If you judge it as just another movie then it is ok but as a Star Wars movie I have a few issues.

If you haven’t watched it yet stop reading.

Healing? What? Why? How? Where has this been for the whole Star Wars story?

Palpatine? The great emperor but is just shoe horned in then killed by a second lightsaber?

The kiss? Absolutely not needed and characters can be great without a love interest.

Her declaration as a skywalker, why? It’s meant to be the end of the saga but they have left a thread to continue if the money dries up.

The whole passing things through the force? Again why and where has it been?

So many scenes were rehashed from elsewhere, or felt that way.

And it felt like it was made by someone who has never watched Star Wars and just imagined what the force could do.

And finally I read other reviews complaining about Rey and how she is a Mary Sue. This just sounds like a bunch of boys whinging because women are finally being represented in there boys toy. I think her and Finn were the good parts from the film. Ren was massively underused in my opinion.

However Taika Waititi is in to direct the next one in the series, can’t wait for that and see how they build a story away from skywalker.

Taika Waititi for Star Wars? Wow. Then I might finally enjoy the next Star Wars then. He surprised me with Thor 3. Thor 1 and 2 were kind of serious, and at first I doubted him in Thor 3. But he made it so full of fun and extremely enjoying to watch. He nailed it.

2.) 18 May 2020 09:49:09
I love Taika Watiti, brilliant fella as well as a great director. Can do comedy action superbly well. One of the best around imo.

I am surprised by Wyred's review of Star Wars, I had to watch it to see what he was on about and I think it just shows he is not the hugest Star Wars fan (like our very own Ed007 for example). Healing has always been in Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker was looking to learn it to save his mother, for example. It was a big part of the Knights of the Old Republic game (which friends of mine say is the best RPG game ever made though I have never played it myself) with healers such as Jolee Bindo and Visas Marr a huge part of Star Wars 'lore'.

It is not done by someone who has no idea about Star Wars, quite the opposite. They have included things clearly to appease the obsessive fans at the expense of building the narrative around the characters. After the racist backlash they had aimed at Rose Tico, I think they just wanted to get all the knobhead fans onside by including as many nods to Star Wars lore as they could.

And for me it doesn't really work because of it. Much as I love that kind of thing, and grew up reading the comics and books so love Star Wars, I would rather they did it well, as Mando did in the series. They didn't and it ended up with a film that rushed through too many storylines to tie it all up and then dallied on a boring, needless ending that dragged on.

3.) 20 May 2020 08:39:12
Taika is now a director where I will just watch the movie even if I know little about it as I know it will be good. jojo rabbit is another great one to watch if you haven’t seen it.

Ed I’ll be honest I have only ever watched the movies, and I got into them fairly late too. so never got into the wider universe of Star Wars so maybe my review was a bit skewed.

But it does seem like we got to the same answer for the movie, no big pay off after three films and not helped by there not being a coherent story for the three films. And as you say so little character development across the trilogy and they had potential to be great characters.

{Ed001's Note - they have made a mess of every film since the original trilogy to be honest, apart from Rogue One. I have faith in Taika to change that and make them good again.}

4.) 21 May 2020 08:31:10
Yeah ed001 rouge one is my personal favourite and was hoping the other disney/star wars products would head in a similar direction.
Also I have been re-watching all 9 of the movies and got to ROTJ last night, what's your opinion on the remastered edit? Seems like Lucas got a trigger finger and changed things for the sake of it and adding the 'new anakin' to the ghost scene makes little sense to me.

{Ed001's Note - I am not keen on the remastering. They were fine as they were and it just felt like change for the sake of it. Unless something adds to the story, I just don't see the point of changing it and none of the changes added to the story.}

Finally got to watch the joker and what a great movie.

The performance to get you feeling sorry for the joker is brilliant and the little nods to the greater batman story were clever but not overdone.

I personally think this is the direction DC should of gone, marvel have done so well with their universe that DC need to do something different and a darker tone to their films is where they seem to naturally excel.

This joker trumps letos but I think that’s because it had time to develop the character.

Hopefully they have another one in the pipeline but if not then the work this film did for the character shouldn’t be wasted.

If you haven’t seen it I would definitely recommend.

Bloody great movie. Future classic for sure. Phoenix was brilliant in it.

Was a cracking show that, really enjoyed it

Anyone looking forward to the Joker movie? we have seen some great adaptations (some not so great), my personal favourite being Mark Hamill in the Arkham games, closely followed by Leger. I'm looking forward to see how the character is portrayed in the movie, but from the trailers it looks promising.

Wyred

{Ed001's Note - I was until all the reviews raved about it and that usually is not a good sign! I am liking they went down the darker route, as one thing I have noticed from the DC TV shows is that the frothy, light ones like Arrow and Flash are crap, while the darker ones, such as Titans, Doom Patrol and Pennyworth are good shows. It has a really high bar with the Dark Knight trilogy to aim at, just hope it doesn't undershoot by as much as Suicide Squad did.}

1.) 02 Sep 2019 15:46:36
Suicide squad & justice league struggled because they had a lot of character development to do in a short time whilst also trying to develop the plot. it's the reason why Avengers works is because all the character work is done prior.
I'll be honest other then batman (and associated characters) I don't really care for DC, although I did watch Aquaman and think it's the best one they've done (Only counting movies from their shared universe attempts). If this movie came before JL it would of immediately made it better. Unfortunately DC were playing catch up and decided to rush the whole thing.
I agree though, darker is the way forward for DC it makes them different from marvel that way. And with them now being part of the house of mouse, I think any chance of marvel creating dark movies is remote.

{Ed001's Note - JL and SS didn't work because they were crap, crap stories and crap characters. They didn't develop them, they just threw them in together and hoped it would work.}

2.) 04 Sep 2019 15:09:47
I am really looking forward for it too. I really like how it looks in the trailers.

I read it somewhere it is meant to be a standalone film though. Does it mean they won't connect it with the Batman character? That part really is a big question mark for me.

3.) 11 Sep 2019 18:58:58
I'll admit I'm more of a marvel fan. I grew up with iron man, Spiderman and the x-men and fantastic four. Both the comics and cartoons, especially the cartoons. There wasn't much DC fare in the 80s, only the campy 60s batman series and the awful superman films. I was never a fan of superman it was too American. Then came Batman 89.

I've not seen many of the new DC films as they do look mostly terrible based on the trailers.

4.) 07 Oct 2019 18:34:52
I've really been enjoying titans think things are progressing too quick could have made trigon a bit longer gave a bit more detail to him

in hero films it's not the hero that makes a good film it's the villain and that is where dc are failing I think they have some really amazing villains the joker has always been my favourite

The joker film looks good and I've read contrasts in opinion some rave reviews and some saying biggest flop of 2019

5.) 29 Oct 2019 15:23:17
I went to see this over the weekend. I reckon it's one of the best films I've seen, period.

It was dark for sure, I didn't feel like a two hour movie it flew by. When he gets his suit on and the Gary Glitter tune comes on it really comes to life. Controversial but oh so good !!!

cant wait to watch it again.

Endgame!

Think it’s time to talk about one of the biggest movies ever, be warned there are spoilers but sure you’ve all seen it by now, right?

I loved this movie and it’s better the second time around.

There are plot holes galore, cough time travel. But I don’t care, this is the culmination of 22 movies, a journey I’ve followed since iron man 2. I joined the part slightly late. And when you are putting so many movies together there will be mishaps, Spider-Man messing up the timeline is testament to that.

But, the characters make this movie professor hulk is brilliant and adds another element to the character, would of been nice to see the transition but they may touch on that in future movies.

Fat Thor has finally meant I have a superhero figure so I appreciate that, I know some complained that it ruined his arc but I think him not going for the head had a huge impact on him.

The others continue their arcs and Ironman shows why this movie universe works, the ending was the only way they could explain him not turning up in future movies and feel it was handled really well.

Cap got the ending he deserved and I also guessed his ending which makes a pleasant change! Yes it messes with the timeline but it still works and I will happily ignore the plot hole.

The battle is insane with some nice touches, like Howard the duck who I managed to miss on both occasions, but letting all the characters have their moment in that was great planning.

My only issue with the film is more characters should of been killed in the battle as the body count is really only black widow and iron man, when Thanos was built up as a super power even without the stones!

How they push forward from here will be interesting but I didn’t think I’d be too bothered, then I saw the trailer for far from home and pretty excited for it so onwards and upwards.

I also think the funeral scene was a clever nod to phase 4, i don’t think the kid was there though as a nod to iron man three, I think we may see more or a potential shield member.

One more thing I was disappointed coulson didn’t show up but I suppose the whole he’s not dead thing may have been too much to get in, although Jarvis from agent carter was a nice touch.

Be interested to hear other people’s thoughts on it.

I came back from my 3rd viewing yesterday. It is honestly in my top 5 films of all time. The Russo Brothers and company did such a fantastic job wrapping it up.

There will also be spoilers here for any loco person who hasn't seen this masterpiece yet.

Iron Man's storyline was perfect, I particularly enjoyed his scene with his Father. It was nice for him to get a moment with him and to say goodbye properly. His death was a great way to go out.

Captain America getting back with Peggy was lovely. He finally got his dance with her.

The battle was just imense. A few highlights for me were:

1. Thor getting both Mjolnir and Strombreaker at the start was epic. He meant business.

2. Captain America getting Thor's hammer. Just epic!

3. When Falcon said "On your left" and the gang all showed up. I wanted to jump around the cinema. And when Cap says "Avengers, Asssemble". I could've died.

4. Spiderman and Iron Man's hug. Touching moment. In that moment you could tell Tony felt it was all worth it.

5. Captain Marvel turning up. Done very well. She is a bit of cheat code so they did well to not involve her too much as it would have been too easy!

There were so many more, but I have rambled on enough.

I do agree more could have died. But if you look at who won't be returning (Tony, Cap, Nat, Vision and I doubt we'll see Hawkeye again) it feels enough. It would have They obviously have a big plan for others and it would be too soon to have them die.

I am glad they didn't have Coulson in. I don't watch the shows but I am aware he came back to life. To me, that just seems too far fetched. His death had meaning in the first Avengers film. When does a death feel final?

I also think the potential plot holes could have explanations for each one. I am prepared to take them all on haha! It would have been funny to see Captain America return the Soul stone and see the Red Skull again though.

2.) 17 May 2019 12:07:11
I've seen it a few times now and I thinks it's everything on could of wanted from the finale of the infinity saga, as its been coined now, to be honest I count infinity war and endgame as one film almost, much like the Lord of the rings trilogy has always just felt like 1 long movie but due to practicality has to be split into 3

The time jump was a really good move and I think fat Thor was the perfect choice to show o me way of dealing with the consequences and depression of the failure and loss they had all faced, every character dealt with the grief in a different way and it all felt right to me so that good

This will be too long if I go on point by point so i will only say a couple more things, firstly the shot of cap when he has his half broke shield he tightens it walks forward and stands, then it shows the long show of him stood against an army. It was like a painting "a man out of time against the army out of time"

With regards to the time travel and in particular the cap ending I'm not sure it's a plot hole so much as they just don't show the story of his life so we don't know, and it's not too important for me. But there are two theories for it

1. There has always been an old cap out there living his life, who was always married to Peggy and was the father of her kids ect as we are never actually told or see who the husband that was saved by captain america is. I like the theory but I'm not sure i agree with it as i don't think it's fits the way time travel was laid out

2. This is what I think happened, when the character go back in time the instant they are there an new timeline is created of which they live in for as long as they like, in caps case 70 years or more. He always kept the gps which can navigate him back to his own timeline so when he got old and peggy passed away he probably was able to find a Tony stark or someone that can use that GPS to figure out how to send him back. I think this is so because when cap leaves he also doesn't have his shield as its destroyed but returns with a brand new shield so someone must have made that for him as well, perhaps he went to t,challa as well to get a new shield made.

Either way I never really worry too much with time travel, it's more of a plot device in most things and being a fan of doctor who I've learnt to let go of 'worrying' over the timey wimey stuff that movies do as no one really knows how it works. Then when add the whole infinity stones into the mix and how they help structure reality, space time ect it really becomes just an interesting conversation as oppose to a point that ruins the enjoyment, what matters is how they use time travel and in the movie the used very well to revisit events and give cap the ending that felt right and about perfect. If they use it again in future however and they bring characters back or undo events ect then I may be a little frustrated but again we will have to see how they execute it

3.) 27 May 2019 10:12:54
I think to really appreciate the time travel thing we need to see the next Spiderman to see the implications. Conveniently seems like his whole class were killed and brought back. But now its 5 years later. That's going to have repercussions.

I'm not a fan of time travel as a plot device. Obviously its handled well in back to the future but endgame then has its say on that.

Maybe I watched it thinking where it can go and after this first one it has so much potential. I would definitely watch it again and I don't do that with many 3hr movies.

For me this was about setting out a stall for where he wants to take it moving forward, with a batman a bit more fragile then others. Which I think will be interesting in its self.

I think that out of all the comics that have been converted to the big screen batman has the best set of characters, they have just been criminally under utilised.

And the only one I'd re-watch out of the Nolan trilogy is the dark Knight. I'd possibly put on the other two if they were on, not sure I'd choose to watch either one from start to finish though.

Wyred

{Ed001's Note - I just got bored and it took me a few times to watch it purely because I kept falling asleep.}

I just got round to watching this, did it in two sittings. The life of a parent! But this being three hours was absolutely the right choice, everything done with a purpose and they did the right thing cutting jokers scene. It just wouldn't of fit in. We have been left just enough to make us want more.

This has got so much potential to be what DC have been trying to copy for so long. They failed with the justice league, too much too soon. And their suicide squad just didn't fit in with anything else.

Batman in particular has the best set of villains imo and the riddler (what a performance by the way) was brilliant. I am excited to see where this goes, I'm just hoping they don't drop the ball.

The games have proved what can be done with the Batman centric characters and it just needs translating to the big screen. I'm praying reeves is the one to do it.

As for the film itself, it is right up there with the best Batman movies and Patterson works as the batman. (Didn't think I'd say that).

Brilliant movie and hopefully it gets the respect it deserves, but I think it won't be until the sequel that people realise how good this was. So many threads and so many characters that can be picked up on.

Wyred

{Ed001's Note - I have no problem with Patterson as Batman particularly, but I thought the film was overly long and boring. It is not a patch on the Nolan trilogy.}

I finally got round to watching this. And as a huge fan of the franchise I really enjoyed this movie.

Craig has done well as bond and the film provided a great ending for him plus other franchise characters.

I'll be interested to see where they take the franchise, I'm really hoping they don't take the cheap way out and reboot it.

Personally I want 'James Bond' to effectively become a moniker similar to 007 that is passed to the best in the business. It opens it up to be literally anyone without changing the fundamentals of the original character.

These last five films have built the feeling that with saving the world there is a genuine cost. And by doing so have built the supporting characters and a framework for future movies. rebooting the franchise just so they can have a new take on james bond would be a huge disservice to the groundwork put in through these last 5 movies.

Plus the reaction to the ending opens up far more possibilities story wise and adds genuine jeopardy for future movies. Not exploring how this impacts the world would be a miss in my opinion.

I'd be interested to see where others think the franchise goes from here.
