Watched Gone Baby Gone for the first time last night and rewatched Red Dragon the night before. Both very good films but got me thinking about two pretty underrated actors. Ed Harris was great as usual in GBG like he is in everything else.

Also surprisingly Anthony Hopkins. He was absolutely terrifying and mesmerising. Yes I know multiple Oscar winner and household name Anthony Hopkins surely can’t be underrated right? But whenever the greatest actors are discussed Pacino, De Niro, Bale (right Ed???) Hopkins doesn’t seem to get a mention. Maybe it’s just me?

So many good actors in that film though Ralph Fiennes, Keitel, Ed Norton etc

Watched Nobody last night. Absolutely loved it! Anyone who likes OTT, brutal action in the style of John Wick should give it a watch. Wasn’t sure how Odenkirk would play a serious gritty character but hats off he nailed it. Easily one of my favourite films released this year

Top 10 modern actors
The post about top 5 films in the past 10 years got me thinking about the best modern actors. Decided to expand it to a top 10 and I’m defining modern as since 2000. Interested to hear peoples opinions as there was so many more I could have included on another day. Next week I’ll do directors. Apologies if it’s already been done I’ve only just discovered this page!

1. Frances McDormand (Burn After Reading, Three Billboards, Nomadland)
2. Tom Hardy (Warrior, Locke, Legend)
3. Sam Rockwell (Moon, Three Billboards, Vice)
4. Christian Bale (Dark Knight Trilogy, Vice, American Hustle)
5. Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island, Departed, Django Unchained, Wolf of Wall Street)
6. Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Sicario, Judas and the Black Messiah)
7. Robert Downey Jr (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, Avengers Endgame)
8. Amy Adams (Arrival, The Fighter, Vice)
9. Hugh Jackman (Prisoners, Logan, Prestige)
10. Gary Oldman (Dark Knight Trilogy, Mank, Darkest Hour)

Honourable mentions Michael Fassbender & Chiwetel Ejiofor(12 Years a Slave), JK Simmons (Whiplash) and Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds)

{Ed001's Note - no Denzel?}

1.) 07 Jun 2021 11:10:16
Brilliant actor Ed but have to confess I haven’t seen as many of his recent films as the others on my list. Off the top of my head I can only think of Training Day and American Gangster I’ve seen lately.

Let’s get your top 10 Ed… I know you have plenty of time!

{Ed001's Note - honestly I haven't really watched many good films recently. Denzel came to mind because I saw The Equaliser while sick in bed with covid over the last few weeks, that and a couple of the John Wick movies. That was all I could actually see was 3 films in about 3 weeks as I was so ill I couldn't look at a screen as it made me feel sick.

But I will try. I defo won't be having Bale in any list except worst actors, he is dreadful. Truly awful actor imo.

I do rate Robert Downey Jr., he always tends to be good. Tom Hardy as well, though he is often wasted in films with the wrong parts, he still usually makes it work. Denzel has to be in there for me, I think he is the best actor of his generation and you always know, even if the film is crap, he will turn in a performance. Having only seen Hugh Jackman in X-Men films I would have said he was crap, but then I saw Logan and he was brilliant in that. So clearly the way he was used in the other films was the issue rather than him. Personally, for me, I mostly watch martial arts films, so it is people like Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen who stand out. I liked Mark Dacascos's performance in the third John Wick as well.

A lot of those films you have picked I have to say I hated so I couldn't pick anyone out of them. Anything by Tarantino is just utter trash imo. I would rather watch the films he copied than his ridiculously overstylised rubbish.

I just can't think of any films I have watched recently that anyone stood out, but I can't remember watching much at all in the way of films. Not now most of my friends here have gone home, going to the cinema is a bit crap on your own and I don't really sit and watch films at home as there is always work I could be doing.}

Oh shit didn’t realise you were ill mate. All good now though?

Shocked you hate Tarantino! Inglorious Basterds is one of my all time favourites. So many scenes that are almost perfect. The opening sequence and the basement bar for building tension alone are incredible. Add in Waltz’s genuinely unsettling performance I think it’s a classic.

I know what you mean about Hardy. As good as he was in Legend the film itself wasn’t that good but I think he’s a phenomenal actor. But can’t see where you’re coming from with Bale sorry!

Jeff Bridges could be in the list too

{Ed001's Note - I don't understand how anyone can like Tarantino, it is just an over the top rip-off of someone else's work. Everything he ever does is the same.

Again I don't see the Bale thing, the only time he was bearable as Batman was when he had the mask on and you couldn't see how wooden he was!

Bridges is ok, but he tends to just play the same character in everything. Tommy Lee Jones is similar, I like him but he does get very typecast.}

Yeah the grizzled old character haha. Funnily enough I watched No Country for Old Men again the other day love that film.

Genuinely shocked at Tarantino and Bale tho Ed! Bale in American Psycho and The Fighter is insanely good.

Joaquin Phoenix should have made the list too

{Ed001's Note - Phoenix was good. I am surprised you like Bale, I have never understood the hype. Yes he goes to extremes in terms of losing weight etc, but he still can't actually act.}

4.) 10 Jun 2021 03:05:46
Agree with Ed01 on good actors wasted in bad scripts or films. Recent one that I can think of is Michael B Jordan in Without Remorse, and for me he was good in Creed movies.

Maybe this is true another way around as well. Like Bale. He often in some really good films, hence he gets hyped.

When talk about great actors, the names instantly come out from my head are always Di Caprio, Hardy, and Denzel.

5.) 10 Jun 2021 03:07:15
Oh, and Morgan Freeman. How can I forget about this guy. And now I remember suddenly him in Ben-Hur; mediocre film and hideous hair cut.

{Ed001's Note - I love Morgan Freeman's voice.}

6.) 10 Jun 2021 11:42:19
Freeman was in Ben Hur??? Fantastic voice he should narrate everything haha

{Ed001's Note - never seen Ben Hur so I don't know, I got distracted by thoughts of his voice. It can make anything worth watching when he narrates it.}

7.) 11 Jun 2021 04:58:45
Yeah he was in the 2016 remake.

{Ed001's Note - and you watched it? Why would you? The first was bad enough.}

8.) 11 Jun 2021 07:02:57
I have no idea why. Haha

{Ed001's Note - oh well I guess we have all seen films that we wonder afterwards why did we even bother.}

9.) 11 Jun 2021 11:57:38
You're right about Jackman I feel like he tends to get lumped unfairly as just another paint by number action star because of his success with X Men. But films like Prisoners, Prestige, Logan really show his ability. Similarly Tom Cruise I feel is quite underrated because of films like Mission Impossible, Jack Reacher etc but given a chance like Magnolia he can be incredible.

Bale though is a force gents. He gets good roles in good films because he is a good actor. Vice, American Psycho, Fighter, American Hustle etc he is a chameleon. He can be guilty of over hamming it and being a bit shouty like Pacino but doesn't take away the fact he's an incredible actor!

{Ed001's Note - I agree on Cruise, I mean who can forget Risky Business? But sorry not having the Bale thing, he is more wooden than Keanu.}

10.) 11 Jun 2021 12:30:07
😂 Fair enough Ed. Beauty of films I suppose everyone has their preference and taste

{Ed001's Note - very much so. Another one I can't stand is Tom Hanks but everyone seems to love him.}

11.) 17 Jun 2021 15:37:30
There are only 2 that really spring to mind for me that are consistently putting out good performances. Tom Hardy and Leonardo Di Caprio. These two consistently put in good performances even when they are in a terrible movie.

However a special mention should go to Joe Pesci, who came out of retirement and put in the performance of a lifetime in The Irishman.

12.) 06 Jul 2021 23:17:07
No Denzel? Never been in a bad film. Man on fire, equalizer, remember the titans, American Gangster even going back to Fallen. Also Brad Pitt is very underrated and has been in some top films. Ryan Gosling will also have a long career, he's already been in some top films. Stephen Graham, although not been in many top films apart from Snatch is absolutely top notch.

Watched Good Time and Uncut Gems by the Safdie brothers for the first time recently. Very impressed with both! Intense, character driven films where you manage to sympathise with not very sympathetic characters. Both similar in that the events of the films gradually snowball and the main characters end up over their head. Recommended

Enjoyed too mate but did you really think it was a typical Guy Ritchie film? Thought it was really different to his other stuff

Watched last night and really disappointed. They deserve some credit for trying to move away from the usual haunted house storyline. But that’s where the praise ends. Boring, over reliance on jump scares, predictable. Series needs a shakeup.
